What Kind of Support Will You Get in Supported Independent Living?

If you’re reading this blog, you’re probably considering taking a step towards more independent living by moving out of home or supporting someone who is. While living on one’s own terms is as exciting as it can be, navigating the NDIS territory isn’t a cakewalk either. Especially, if you’re looking for supported independent living in Melbourne, you’ll probably be wondering what kind of help and support you will be getting from this specialised program.

More importantly, it can be hard to understand how the NDIS can help you maximise your independence at home or at a shared facility. We know you have got lots of questions about SIL services. So, it’s time we answer them one at a time.

What is SIL?

NDIS SIL in Melbourne is how the National Disability Insurance Scheme helps people with high support needs live independently in shared accommodation (mostly) with 24/7 support to help each participant develop daily living skills.

The funding a participant receives from their NDIS plans exists to cover the cost of the support staff in the house as well as rent/board but does not pay for personal expenses such as activities and medication. So, let’s discuss what kind of support you can expect from SIL.

Types of Supports Under SIL

First let’s make clear that the support available to you in SIL depends on who lives there and the type of support they need to live as independently as possible.

In-house Support Staff to Help With Your Individual Needs:

This can be:

  •  24/7 support with sleepover where a support worker is always at home with you, in your time of need
  • Drop-in support where a support worker helps you with your daily tasks and then leaves after it’s over

Help With Completing Daily Tasks and Building Skills

These include:

  • Housekeeping (shopping, meal preparation, cleaning)
  • Personal care (showering, dressing, personal hygiene, continence)
  • Social skills (meeting new people, doing activities either solo or in group)
  • Budgeting (finance management like paying bills, following up ledger)

Help with life outside the home

These are like:

  • Transport (getting to and from doctor’s appointments, work, school)
  • Appointments (booking and managing your appointments)

In case, you have an activity or task in mind and thinking if it is provided under our SIL disability services in Melbourne, don’t hesitate to write to Australian Society Care. We can be reached at info@australiansocietycare.com.au.

How Does SIL Promote Independence?

Supported independent living helps you maximise your independence in two major ways. Firstly, by providing support to help you with day-to-day tasks such as cleaning or getting to appointments. This means you will learn to live away from your caregivers like your parents.

The other way SIL promotes independence is by helping you develop skills to live as freely as possible. On one hand, you’ll receive help, but on the other you’ll also learn to prepare meals, shop for groceries, and follow a budget for yourself.
